What are the Nicknames for Marijuana?

Like a lot of drugs and herbs there are a heap of nicknames and street slang words used to describe marijuana. Sometimes this is to help aid the description of the bud (ie. Tell the smoker the exact strand or strength of the bud) and other times this is for added subtly, for example by using a lesser known nickname for the herb than it is most likely only other people involved in the cannabis culture will know what you are talking about.

Some of the more common words for the drug include cannabis, dope, green, hash and ganja. There are also several terms used to describe a cannabis cigarette, these include the likes of joint, spliff, jay, blunt, fattie and doobie.

Some of the terms used to describe the quality of the weed being smoked include dank, hydro, chronic. Some terms used to describe a marijuana smoker include stoner or pothead.

Some of the more obscure terms used in reference to cannabis include nicknames such as:

Green, Mary Jane, Giggle Smoke, Hooch, Smoke, M J, Dagga, Ditch, Leaf, Rasta (Comes from the word Rastafarian) as Gange.

There are literally hundreds more terms that are used to describe cannabis; a lot of these vary depending on the location in which you live.

Also note that the number “420” is used to describe any cannabis related activity. It is said to have come from a group of high school boys who once used to smoke marijuana at 4:20pm after school every day and since caught on to become a well known term in the subculture.
